IN A FLASH: A Flash Is Born!

On October 12, 1985, a 6-foot egg (constructed by ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡ technology students) was rolled onto the 50-yard line during halftime of ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡'s Homecoming game at Dix Stadium.

Earlier in the day, the egg rode in a nest down Main Street in the Homecoming parade, on a float with ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡ cheerleaders.

In a cloud of smoke at midfield, the egg hatched and Flash the Golden Eagle (eaglet) emerged.

"Baby Flash" is shown here, shortly after hatching, with an actual golden eagle, also named Flash, who appeared at select ÎçÒ¹¾ç³¡ athletic events until the mid-90s. To read about the progression of mascots, visit /magazine/news/forerunners-flash.
